People are getting used to the levels of special educational needs now found in classrooms across the UK. New figures show 1 in 5 pupils get extra support and as many as half a million have an EHCP for the highest levels of need. This is crippling schools and bankrupting local government. It is unsustainable and someone needs to ask why it is happening and get us off the burning platform before it's too late.
Why is there so little interest in why our children are being so damaged?
For one, the British still assume that medical authority knows best, the BBC is reliable, the government is telling the truth. See Covid. So no pressure from below, and affected parents are too exhausted to campaign.
Second, the worship of money means that saleable drugs are prioritised in medicine. This corrupts the whole. Looking for reasons and prevention produces no profit. See childhood vaccination in the US for blatant abuse of children for profit.
Thirdly, it is possible that the great silence on "autism" exists because pharma already knows some of the answers but doesn't want to face them. Too much loss of face and status. For example, some studies suggest a link between some ASD cases and induction at birth - a battering of the brain perhaps, birth brain injury in some exceptional cases. The medical reaction was - can't be. We've been doing it for years. Too uncomfortable a thought.
As I read this, I had to ask myself why no one bothers to tell us where all these disabled children are coming from. Stories about INCREASES IN SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENTS everywhere in news reports from the UK and Ireland. I’ve been cataloging them for over eight years.
This phenomenon of ever-more disabled children is a worldwide happening, but no one is in a panic about it. Much of the increase is because of more children with neurological problems, most notably the explosion in autism over the past 25 years—something authorities have been able to convince us is nothing new. We’re told it is all part of “neurodiversity” and these kids have always been here, just called something else.
To any logically thinking person, that makes no sense. England has had law requiring the education of disabled children since 1970, so schools would have had to provide for them even if they weren’t called autistic. So why is the education system in freefall from the impact of so many dysfunctional students? How long can this continue?
The MSM speaks with a variety of tongues for every problem. One the one hand the Send financial crises that threaten numerous councils, on the other hand innumerable articles extolling the power of an 'autism' diagnosis for celebrity adults that is credited with increasing their confidence and effectiveness. Brilliant if so, but what about the parents of profoundly autistic children ? Too busy to read the papers, probably. As a med graduate in 1968, it was about 20 years before I saw an autistic child, despite doing paeds, child guidance clinics, and then GP full time. Where were all the autistic children before that ? I was surrounded by them of course, but was so clinically clueless that I did not recognise them. So today's experts would have you believe.
Precisely the issue of the shifting baseline. Autism is normal. The celebrities help normalise it aswell. I do worry about how stupid or coopted all our professionals have become.
Its time we started talking about the UK autism czar Simon Baron Cohen.
Since he`s a public figure, on the public payroll and frequently on tv, like any politician I feel we have a right to talk about what he does in public in regards to his job and income that we as taxpayers pay for.
He`s paid by the UK taxpayer to run the Autism Research Centre in Cambridge, this great hope for the maybe 1-2 million autistic people in the UK, let alone the hundreds of thousands of those with profound autism and the 64% overall with an IQ below 85 and bleak futures. Maybe hope too for the hundreds of thousands of those battling what was once Aspergers each day considering suicide because they can’t deal with their condition anymore.
He also seems to be the UK go to guy on autism frequently featured on tv discussing the condition, although in a sanitised way.
However if you went to his research centre expecting hundreds of scientists frantically spending each day looking through their microscope and searching for ways to prevent or treat this very expensive, extreme disability as any other medical condition you would be very disappointed.
Some mentions about their crowning achievements on their website :-
2023: The first evidence that autistic people have increased risk of physical health conditions across all 9 major organ systems in the body
2023: The first evidence that postnatal depression is more common in autistic new mothers
2022: The first large scale study of autistic people in the criminal justice system
2022: The first evidence that autistic people are more likely to die by suicide, using post-mortem coroner’s data
2021: The first study of substance use and misuse in autistic adults
2020: The first large scale study of elevated rates of transgenderism in autism
2019: The first evidence of vulnerability in autistic adults
2017: The first study of camouflaging in autism
Wow, who would have thunk that, all that time and money & any one of us non-scientists or psychologists could have told them that for free. It would be funny if not so sad.
The website also basically says the centre supports the nonsensical neurodiversity view of autism as a difference rather than something to be cured or reduced in anyway, basically contradicting its entire purpose of why the centre was built in the first place
It gets worse in late 2020 Simon Baron Cohen released a book called The Pattern Seekers presenting a nonsensical narrative of autism being part of natural neurodiversity and more insultingly that we humans should be grateful for autism as it played a key part in human civilisational development.
As far as I am aware the proceeds of the book went to SBC, not to any charity.
Using an analogy can you imagine the outrage – the head of cancer research - releasing a book promoting the benefits of cancer while being paid by the taxpayers to research and mitigate the condition, try to imagine the person running a marathon and their sponsors trying to raise money to help research combat the condition, only to hear the person your entrusting the proceeds to is openly against doing anything.
Somehow this is all acceptable.
This is the man who autism parents and taxpayers pay and entrust to develop treatments for our children.
It gets worse still, in early 2021 SBC went on TV and UK media to announce Spectrum 10k.
A new initiative to discover the genetic secrets of autism.
Shortly after a mysterious neurodiversity movement inspired online petition was created with a pathetic 5000 computer generated signatures to stop Spectrum 10k, also around that time a mini bus size group of demonstrators turned up outside the centre wanting the research stopped.
SBC caved in to the neurodiversity movement saying there will be a consultation with autistic people (maybe he`s referring to the hundreds of millions worldwide, the autistic people living on the streets in India or those who don’t know what planet they live on I don’t know?)
By the way please buy my newly released book!
So there was a consultation about the consultation that went on for years and in the end the whole thing was scrapped.
I`ll leave the most shocking for last:-
2024: Professor Baron-Cohen is made honorary fellow of Royal Society of Medicine
2021: Simon Baron-Cohen is awarded a Knighthood for services to autism and autism research
Wow Mike. That's some comment! It is a shocking state of affairs. So many people seem to get awards and prizes for helping to avoid the truth and promote their own work. Your comments about the read across to cancer research are very powerful.
Our hope is that developments in America are going to alter the narrative for the better. There is more hope of change now than at any time since the start of the epidemic. It's not just a science problem it's much more a political problem.
You know how this works Simon old boy, a little bit of science, genetics only, nothing too drastic, tick a few of them diversity boxes, getting the message out to the public vaccines don't cause autism, 200k a year, a lucrative book deal and knighthood at the end if you don't rock the boat.
It is interesting to see all the honours given to people like SBC who reinforce the dominant paradigm when it comes to autism. I've written about quite a few of these researchers/Clinicians whose work is distinctly underwhelming.

You are so right Anne! It has been an incredible shift in such a short time.
